Gunja Chakraborty, the artistic founder and teacher at Nrityadeep, has over 13 years of training in the classical Indian dance form known as Bharatnatyam.  After moving to Canada, she established a career as a banking professional with one of the leading financial institutions.  It was during this time that she came to realize that this beautiful artistic dance form fueled her mind and soul and she began to learn under the tutelage of Menaka Thakkar’s dance academy.  She then went on to train for several years under Shri. Deva Gunaseelan’s dance academy.

Gunja’s connection with dance was much stronger than she herself imagined and she felt a deep desire to pursue Bharatmatyam and study the nuances of this form of dance.  It was along this path of self-discovery that she met her guru, Dr. Swati Daithankar who helped her realize that Bharatnatyam was truly her greatest passion.  With this new vision and understanding, she began a dedicated study of dance and training towards more advanced levels under the expert guidance of her guru.

With an interest in contemporary dance forms, Gunja conducts workshops in body toning, increased stamina and creates fitness awareness by yoga, Bharatnatyam and semi-intensive exercises.

“Ever since I have taken up this art seriously, I have realized that it has become a complete workout of the BODY, MIND and SOUL.  Bharatnatyam includes body movements, facial expressions, hand gestures, footwork that is all in-sync.  To master this art one requires self-discipline, concentration and determination.”
